Bernard “Pretty” Purdie – Instore Signing
Posted by Rex in Diggin', flavour of the month, News, People on November 30th, 2018
On Monday December 3 Northside will play host to the one and only Bernard Purdie, the most recorded drummer in the world. A long time Northside favourite, and a funk originator – Purdie transcends music genres and is regarded as one of the finest and funkiest drummers to ever tickle the skins. He’s played with everyone from James Brown, Eddie Palmieri, The Last Poets and Aretha Franklin to Steely Dan, Hall & Oates and Robert Palmer. Undisputed heavyweight and real live living legend. Don’t miss your chance to meet the man who put the “shuffle” in the funk (and the Rock, and the Jazz, and the Soul and the Blues).
December 25 is for dancing! J.B. R.I.P.

local SOUL release on NORTHSIDE RECORDS – THE SEVEN UPS
Posted by Chris in flavour of the month, Fresh stock, Funk 45 of the Month on October 21st, 2016
Thats right. We are on the front foot with the great local funk!
The latest 45 from Melbourne’s The Seven Ups, sees the band stepping up into the producer’s chair to push the boundaries like never before. The result is faster, dirtier and a whole lot meaner.
Lead track, The Aviator, is the quintessential Seven Ups, afro-groove jam. Paying undeniable homage to Fela, the tune is driven by an unrelenting rhythm section that won’t stop for anything, and laced with super lo-fi horns that bubble and squawk like it’s their last day on earth. Sitting outside of the boundaries of Afro-Funk, Dash Tapper is the ultimate B-side. This is Afro-Fuzz! Different to anything the band has done to date, the track draws the listener in with a heavy car-chase groove then decimates with big-muffed, freaky-nasty guitar. Released on Northside Records, the 45 has been pressed in a limited run of 300.

Silent Jay X Jace XL – Live instore
Posted by Rex in flavour of the month, Live music, People, Recent releases on January 7th, 2016
Damn, shit is blowing up on our door step again. This time it’s Silent Jay and Jace XL, taking the underground by storm with the release of their debut “SACRIFICE” EP on UK based label Rhythm Section. We are lucky enough to have this talented duo appearing live instore on Friday January 15th to celebrate the release of the new EP (that has already sold out worldwide!). Fortunately, we will have exclusive limited stock of the cassette EP available on the night. Don’t miss your chance to bag one – and more importantly, don’t miss your chance to see Silent Jay X Jace XL live at Northside.
Cop a listen of the new EP right now. SACRIFICE
From the press release: “Coming straight out of Melbourne with plentiful attitude, Producer/multi-instrumentalist Silentjay teams up with fellow Hiatus Kaiyote backing vocalist, Jace XL to present ‘Sacrifice’, a mini album of epic proportions.
At once sincere and heartfelt, the songs do not shy away from the playful influence of 90s RnB – a sound that is a defining influence on this EP, which despite clocking in at just under 30 minutes, attains a level of artistry and conceptual cohesiveness that many artists could only dream of. Another VERY serious record from an impossibly fertile Melbourne.“
Some things are just meant to go together – peaches & cream, cheese & vegemite, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and so on. Silent Jay X Jace XL are no exception. Spread it thick!

We’ve got some new Tshirts in store, just in time for 9th Anniversary of James Browns’s passing…. I mean Christmas. We only have a handful of these so if you wanna rep Burn City Soul, get down to Northside. Size S / M / L / XL only. $40ea.
“I have grown tired of looking at T-shirt designs that say BROOKLYN and L.A. so I decided it was time to bring a little local flavour for the crew… Who is the crew? That is you! All the peoples that have been part of what we can now call BURN CITY SOUL*. Forged here in Melbourne in the 21st century – It’s not just soul or hip hop, or jazz, or funk, or even community radio. It’s way bigger than the sum of it’s parts. It’s all over the city and deep in the suburbs, and slowly spreading around the world.”

Posted by Rex in flavour of the month, Gigs, Live music, News, People on November 6th, 2015
I told you to watch this space! See the poster for all the details. Read below for what Chris Gill has to say about this upcoming instore. Be there!
“This next announcement could be my proudest moment yet. For the 13 years I have operated this shop, one album that I say is perhaps the most important of all Australian records is ARCHIE ROACH’s “Charcoal Lane”. It was written on Gertrude Street, it was lived on Gertrude Street. For the first few years of the store I had a copy in the window. Now we get much more than that… THE 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of one of the countries most Important records ever made. It is ARCHIE ROACH “Charcoal Lane”.
I am proud to announce that at 2pm on SuNDAY the 15th NOVEMBER Northside Records will host the legend Archie Roach, live and INSTORE performing songs off his album Charcoal Lane that he wrote here 25 years ago. To commemorate the milestone CHARCOAL LANE has been reissued as a vinyl album the way it was originally released back then…. Come to Northside to secure a copy as they are VERY LIMITED.
Archie will be joined instore by another up and coming Australian legends EMMA DONOVAN & THE PUTBACKS. They will also PERFORM LIVE in the store. As you know Emma and the Putbacks have just released an amazing double sided 7″ which upholds the local indigenous heritage with a cover version of ARCHIE ROACH and on the other side WARUMPI BAND.” See the previous post for more info.
