TIM MAIA 70th worldwide BIRTHDAY PARTY at NORTHSIDE
THERE’S A PARTY IN FITZROY this FRIDAY the 28th September!!!!!!
There is a record label in American LUAKA BOP who are going to reissue the legendary soul work done by TIM MAIA from BRAZIL.
They have organised birthday parties all over the world to celebrate what would have been Tim’s 70th birthday, on September 28
They have parties confirmed in record stores (eg Origami Vinyl, Other Music, Dusty Grooves in America) and bars around the world (Jose Gonzalez just confirmed to DJ in Gothenburg), and have confirmed Tim Maia dedicated shows with fantastic radio stations like WFMU (New York), Dub Lab (Los Angeles) and Radio Nova (Paris).
We will be having a party in our record store for him. Now, Tim was a massive party boy and he would be super psyched that we are going to get down for him. Next FRIDAY 28th …..5 – 7pm..….oh, and there will be FREE BEER! cases of kiwi’s classic TUATARA HELLES http://tuatarabrewing.co.nz/about/ here is a good way to drink the TUATARA! http://youtu.be/v20C4CW3XOE
CHERRY BAR has got SOUL!!! (on Thursdays!)
One of the longest soul / funk residencies in the world is right on our doorstep as Vince “The Price” Peach and Pierre Baroni bring the soul sounds until 5 in the AM! every thursday at Cherry Bar. This Thursday is the last week for the SASKWATCH residency (which I can testify is SWEATY!) Next month begins the WOMEN OF SOUL residency at Cherry for February. With DEEP STREET SOUL providing the superheavygroove. Look out for our local soul sisters to get fonky.
SOUL FOOD @ The Espy
This night looks great! Not just because I’m there, but the great local talent again! Electric Empire with a new album really close and just after they slayed them at Glastonbury, I can’t wait to hear them. Then there’s the Melodics and the Cumbia Cosmonauts who have just released their debut LP. Not to mention the rest, I’ve banged on about them before! But flying in from Detroit is ELZHI from Slum Village here alone, hopefully to rep his new awesome album Elmatic, a tribute to Nas’ “Ilmatic” only Detroit styles with the WILL SESSIONS band behind him, on the shelf at Northside now! HURRY!
THE MELBOURNE SCENE…..?! really….
Well it aint no secret now, Jemery Sole, a radio cat from KCRW radio in Los Angeles, scored (an awesome holiday) a trip to Australia as part of a sponsored travelogue (tourism Australia). The purpose was to document what he could in terms of culture and good times and talent. I think Jeremy had mild expectations of what might be in stall, but I think he got BLOWN AWAY!He says, “Instead I found bands, deejays and producers that draw influence from other regions of the world, just like anyone else, but cull their strongest inspirations from their own souls – which is always the makings of the best music, in my opinion.”
Jeremy Sole Lance Ferguson & Leroy
He posted up a travel blog that you can access here…

It should be added to a little more, so keep checking…
It was great to speak with Jeremy and to sit back and actually look at what we have here in Melbourne. It is nice when an outsider (no Pony Boy jokes) comes in and opens you eyes a bit. Performances are by The Cactus Channel, Kylie Auldist, Monkey Mark, LOTEK & Morganics, Laneous, and loads more to come (I think).
To think this is just a snapshot over one weekend…Pity we didn’t take him to the footy!
