Some partnerships are as inevitable as they are beautiful, Bogey and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn, Hall and Oates, chips and gravy, and, as such, become the stuff of legends. On Tuesday, May 15, amid Melbourne’s biting autumnal squall, another such partnership joined this illustrious roll call; Saskwatch and Northside Records.
In a ceremony held at Northside Records’ namesake retail store, the band and Northside head honcho Chris Gill inked the deal amidst an atmosphere of mutual love and respect with a shared commitment to “Keep things real”. Reports of high fives and hair ruffles amongst the attendees are, as yet, unconfirmed but highly likely.
Says Saskwatch’s Liam McGorry of the signing,”We’re incredibly excited to be signing with Chris and Northside Records. Not only are they our favourite record store, but have been a supporter of local music in Melbourne for over 10 years. It’s also a privilege to be the first release on their label.”
Gill added, “Saskwatch and Northside Records are the perfect fit. They are both funky and ace. Together we hope to launch a great sound and a new label that will serve up more Funk than John Mcenroes’ headband.”
It’s a Melbourne truth that Northside Records is the city’s eminent source for all great things soul and soul-related. Therefore it comes as no surprise to those in the know that Northside and the city’s hottest soul group (or family as there are nine of them) Saskwatch would join forces to create and spread new funk-flavoured magic to the good people.
The first fruit from this new relationship will drop in July in the form of a new video and single from Saskwatch to be followed by the band’s hotly anticipated album in mid-August. More immediately, word comes through the grapevine, that Northside Records is planning a very special party for, and performance from, Saskwatch soon… keep your eyes peeled for updates.
Saskwatch will be performing every Thursday night this June at Melbourne’s Cherry Bar. Get up, close and personal!

He Came, he saw, he signed. It was a true honour to host Eddie Palmieri at Northside last Saturday. He is one of my most favourite artists of all time, and he was in my store!!! The day was a great success and I think Eddie was really happy and actually touched by all the love that came outta Fitzroy for him. There were over 100 people, and on a rainy Saturday that is incredible!  Big thanks to Wally and DEL BARRIO and all who played on the day. As Eddie arrived the band delivered a scorching version of La Malanga and the faces on the guys was worth everything!

lf-instore_print-lrLORD FINESSE…..hip hop royalty…..head of the DITC crew… will be at Northside Records Friday 23rd, 5.30pm for a instore signing. Sure he’ll have a dig as well, as you know he is one of the heaviest diggers around. His production always pays homage to super fine funk and soul riffs so he’ll be right at home at Northside!

Lord Finesse should need no introduction to any hip hop head — his crew D.I.T.C — that’s Diggin’ In The Crates, is made up of the creme of New York’s finest: Big L, Diamond D, Showbiz & AG, OC, Fat Joe & Buckwild, and the extended fam includes cats like Dj Premier, Big Pun, Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles, Cuban Link, Party Arty and Bless of Wild Life crew just to name drop a few.

Known for his laid back rhyming style and smooth flows, Finesse has recorded three albums with D.I.T.C: D.I.T.CAll Love and a live album recorded in memory of Big L, as well as several solo albums: The Funky Technician, Return Of The Funky Man, The Awakening plus 2 ‘rare and unreleased’ compilation albums. Fin has also produced beats for some real hip hop heavyweights, including Notorious B.I.G and Dr. Dre amongst others, and is well known for holding it down as a DJ too. There are not many cats in the game who can MC, produce and DJ and even less who would come close to touching Lord Finesse in any of these skills let alone all three. Respect!

Party starts at 5.30pm on Friday. Bring your Finesse Productions, LPs and girlfriends down and have them autographed by The Funky Technician, say hi and get the lowdown from the man himself. Better get in early – diggers in the house…

Word up: After the signing shit gets crazy at the Laundry. Get Up presents: Lord Finesse, Sheep, Manchild, Mu-Gen, Arks, Class A & Lotus. Don’t sleep.

Step right up, step right up, soul for sale….

ikebe_shakedown_s1 Here are a couple of amazing new releases that have just hit the shelves.

Outta Brooklyn we have the great IKEBE SHAKEDOWN, heavy and funky this instrumental afrobeat band is ready for the dancefloor. They bring together elements of psyche and soul and put it together just right. From an Isaac Hayes cover to bold as brass originals you need this record for home. Ubiquity Records has released this LP with a copy of a cd in the one package.

Now-Again Records is proud to present Tamanrasset, the sophomore release from the trio of Jay Whitefield,karl_hector_and_the_malcouns-tamanrasset_s Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija – also known as Karl Hector and the MalcounsTamanrasset is a mosaic of Eastern and Northern African folk music, Western psychedelia, jazz and funk. This vinyl-only-EP, packaged in screen printed jackets from Hit & Run with original artwork from Kevin Lyons, is limited to 1000 copies.

There are so many more, but another LP that got me dancing around the store, (it’s not that hard!!) is the 2nd of the West Indies Funk comps! Out on the Trans Air label of Puerto Rico, this compilation of Carribean funk may not be from well known bands but they rock some great cover versions of James Brown (‘The Big Payback’)west-indies-funk-vol-2-hi-res, Sly & The Family Stone (‘Sing A Simple Song’), Charles Wright (‘Express Yourself’) and Young Holt Unlimitied (‘Soulful Strut’). Its nots just the covers but the originals are essential as well. Don’t take my word for it, come into the store and check them out! I gotta dancefloor here now!

Here is a little video MR LOB took on the day – Saturday APRIL 16th 2011. It was the first song performed by the boys. Basically members of Melbourne’s funk engine, THE BAMBOOS, this new formation sees them do covers of funky jazz classics.

They have a new album due to drop on freestyle records (uk) later in 2011, called BLACK FEELING 2 – lookout for it!

Here is THE FIREMEN performing the FREDDIE HUBBARD classic “Straight life”
