Make it to NORTHSIDE for this one!
Sampa The Great makes her Melbourne debut at the local home of soul. Free entry, must bring vibes.
“The Great Mixtape” contains sounds both classic and completely new, like a Digable Planets record that really did arrive from another, funkier planet” Okayplayer
“This is a record of personal, cultural, geographical and spiritual pride.” SoundDoc
“This is hip-hop of the highest quality” Indie Shuffle
“You don’t get old souls like Sampa in hip-hop anymore and that’s maybe what makes this listen so captivating” Cool Accidents
“It’s a search for creativity, laughter, purpose & rhythms.” With those four simple terms, Sampa The Great describes her astonishing newest release, “The Great Mixtape.” Hailing from Sydney by way of Zambia, Sampa has a penchant for poetry and weaves dense lyrical mazes with her verses, drawing listeners into a lush, imaginative world. Her music bonds from spoken-word to pure hip-hop rapping, with stops at psychedelic and bluesy waypoints in between; it’s the sound of an adventurous young mind pushing out against all boundaries.
To listen is to learn.
SASKWATCH have launched new a clip for their new single ‘I’ll Be Fine’.
The video was animated by Jason Galea and is the first single from their forthcoming album “Sorry I Let It Come Between Us” out June 12th via our own label!!!
The album itself was recorded over a month long period at Mt Slippery – an old silversmith warehouse come recording studio on the outskirts of Philadelphia, America. It’s the studio of Dr Dog’s Scott McMicken and Nathan Sabatino, who together produced the album. Saskwatch have long been big fans of Dr Dog, both musically and in their work as producers, and relished at the chance to head overseas and work alongside them. The result: a raw, solemn and sparse collection of genre-jumping songs.

SASKWATCH “Leave it All Behind” LP and CD and digital.
This Friday Northside and Saskwatch join soul forces to give the world whatat they need, an incredible debut soul special. The first ever record by SASKWATCH and the first by NORTHSIDE RECORDS. What a match.
Be a part of this history and say you were there at the start! The peoples of Saskwatch are on the rise and with abilities shown already the sky is the limit. All the tunes are written by Liam McGorry and his vision has proven to be and incredible soul sound. Nkechi Anele has just started to sing. She had spent most of here time dancing to the band and then decided to grab the mike. Ever since then she has proven to be a god send. And her game just gets fresher and fresher. We could go through all the band and highlight each great members shine, but instead check out this video and listen.
Some partnerships are as inevitable as they are beautiful, Bogey and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn, Hall and Oates, chips and gravy, and, as such, become the stuff of legends. On Tuesday, May 15, amid Melbourne’s biting autumnal squall, another such partnership joined this illustrious roll call; Saskwatch and Northside Records.
In a ceremony held at Northside Records’ namesake retail store, the band and Northside head honcho Chris Gill inked the deal amidst an atmosphere of mutual love and respect with a shared commitment to “Keep things real”. Reports of high fives and hair ruffles amongst the attendees are, as yet, unconfirmed but highly likely.
Says Saskwatch’s Liam McGorry of the signing,”We’re incredibly excited to be signing with Chris and Northside Records. Not only are they our favourite record store, but have been a supporter of local music in Melbourne for over 10 years. It’s also a privilege to be the first release on their label.”
Gill added, “Saskwatch and Northside Records are the perfect fit. They are both funky and ace. Together we hope to launch a great sound and a new label that will serve up more Funk than John Mcenroes’ headband.”
It’s a Melbourne truth that Northside Records is the city’s eminent source for all great things soul and soul-related. Therefore it comes as no surprise to those in the know that Northside and the city’s hottest soul group (or family as there are nine of them) Saskwatch would join forces to create and spread new funk-flavoured magic to the good people.
The first fruit from this new relationship will drop in July in the form of a new video and single from Saskwatch to be followed by the band’s hotly anticipated album in mid-August. More immediately, word comes through the grapevine, that Northside Records is planning a very special party for, and performance from, Saskwatch soon… keep your eyes peeled for updates.
Saskwatch will be performing every Thursday night this June at Melbourne’s Cherry Bar. Get up, close and personal!
He Came, he saw, he signed. It was a true honour to host Eddie Palmieri at Northside last Saturday. He is one of my most favourite artists of all time, and he was in my store!!! The day was a great success and I think Eddie was really happy and actually touched by all the love that came outta Fitzroy for him. There were over 100 people, and on a rainy Saturday that is incredible! Big thanks to Wally and DEL BARRIO and all who played on the day. As Eddie arrived the band delivered a scorching version of La Malanga and the faces on the guys was worth everything!
