BUMPY “Return Home” new 7″ out on Northside Records and an INSTORE

Our next release is out on FRIDAY!!!!

Naarm/Melbourne-based soul artist and proud Noongar woman Bumpy presents her new single, ‘Return Home’, it illuminates the transportive nature of BUMPY, guiding the listener through a world in which vulnerability is strength and power is quiet but self-assured.

Described by Bumpy as an ode to home and “the people, places and connections that make us feel grounded and at ease”, ‘Return Home’ is propelled by stirring strings arranged by Aaron Wyatt, who recently marked history as the first Indigenous conductor of an Australian state orchestra.

The lead vocalist of Naarm/Melbourne neo-soul outfit SQUID NEBULA , Bumpy emerged as a solo artist in late 2020 with her debut single ‘Falling’. Falling is featured on the record as well!

So happy to have Bumpy join the incredible crew of local musicians on the Northside Records label to be our 28th release!!!

The single is released digitally next Wednesday, the vinyl will be out Friday!

The INSTORE will be super special with visuals provided by SIMBIOTIC VISUALS. Come along at 6pm…. b#…….band will be on at 6.05pm and we will be all finished by 7pm……

Crown Ruler, Northside Records & Duke Street Block Party proudly present…

Two of the most iconic and influential archetypes of modern Brazilian music. Legacies that have proliferated and pushed since the 1960s, remaining just as relevant nearly six decades later.

Coinciding with three hotly anticipated performances at The Night Cat, it is with great privilege we invite you to come meet and greet the living legends – Azymuth and Marcos Valle – for a very special in-store signing @ Northside Records Friday 18th March, 5-7pm.

That’s right, Gertrude Street just might get shut down as Brazilian royalty come to grace Naarm’s funky music institution. A rare occasion to get up close and personal with the minds of those who literally reshaped music history. Bacana!

For those of you who might want to add some of their storied catalogs to your collection (signed copies with a memory at that), Northside Records will be stocked up with plenty of Brazilian ‘bossa-samba-funk-fusion’ wax goodness on the day.

This is an entirely FREE event and as you’d expect, we’re anticipating a serious turn out. We encourage you to get down early to ensure you have enough time to meet your idols.

Given their significance, it’s mind boggling to think Azymuth will only now make their Australian debut while Marcos Valle makes his return for the first time since 2007.

Valle and Azymuth’s enduring influence on funk, soul, samba, jazz, pop and even rock of the world, cannot be underestimated; an adventurous brand of fusion which continues to be an inspiration for artists everywhere. A who’s who of contemporary iconoclasts have sampled, remixed, repurposed or collaborated with the giants – Madlib, Roni Size, MF Doom, IG Culture, Flying Lotus, Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammed, Mark Pritchard, Theo Parrish, 4Hero and so on; Such is the lasting legacy of these genre-bending radicals who continue to create genuinely pertinent music to this day.

Between these savant’s they’ve worked with them all – Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Sergio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Leon Ware, Chicago, Jorge Ben, Airto Moreira, Chick Corea, George Duke, Milton Nascimento, Tim Maia to list just a handful. They’ve made global pop hits and explored the more esoteric. Sampled by the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Will.I.Am the music continues to influence today’s pop culture.

A more than complimentary double header, the occasional collaborators both define not only the story of Rio’s bursting bossa-nova and samba scenes of the 60s/70s but also the forward-thinking imagination to take those traditions to expansive new territories, helping explore modern music’s potential.

On parallel journeys, each have continuously evolved and found new generations of fans, occasionally crossing paths on recordings or live performances to this day. The two combine once more for a bonafide flex of their repertoire and improvisational mastery. A showcase of some of the most defining Brazilian music made and its lasting impact on the world.

feel free to call us here at NORTHSIDE RECORDS on 94177557 if you would like any more information.

This event will take place on the lands of the Wurrundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. Crown Ruler and Northside Records acknowledge their Elders past and present, and pay their respect to all First Nations people. Always Was, Always Will Be.

Northside Records: The Soul of Melbourne

Nestled in the bend of the vibrant Gertrude Street precinct there’s a particularly distinctive record store, unique in both looks and personality. In appearance, it’s hard to miss – swathed in an incandescent sky blue, Northside Records sticks out like a beacon. The store has been an important nexus for the Melbourne music community since 2002, championing funk, soul, jazz, reggae and underground dance music in a city that has not always held a reputation as an epicentre for soul and funk music. A few months ago, Questlove nominated Melbourne as the soul and funk capital of the world, Chris Gill’s Northside Records has been central to the reputation….

Big thanks to all of you good good people who made it down to funky town. Sampa sure put on a show! One of the greatest! Here is a review of the show done by our work experience student who wasnt’ there but interviewed Lauren Taylor (RRR) who was!

Northside Record’s Friday night in-store performance by Sampa the Great was a triumphant occasion. A crowd of 400+ people filled the tight pace store before spilling out onto Gertrude Street. So much so that a caped Chris Gill had to protect the audience from the threat of 60 rhinos on skateboards coming at them along the tram tracks.

Footage of the concert shows Sampa dancing on the desktop overlooking a crowd of wildly moving bodies. The hysteria that came about spread to those who weren’t even at attendance, from word of mouth individuals knew of the magic that Sampa gave off that night. Those who were amidst the madness say it was “one of the best concerts they had ever been to”. With a crowd made up of anyone and everyone, the performance exemplified the power of music and its effect on an audience and a place.

As an artist, Sampa’s new album is a complete elevation to her previous work. Her initial two mixtapes ‘Birds and the BEE9’ and ‘The Great mixtape’ brewed elements of what was coming for the young artist but it seems that with her latest release, she has officially come. Arrived. Not only do audiences love the sound, music videos and overall presentation of the work helps audience understand the underlying notions of identity and home in the album. Combined provides a powerful reappearance into the scene. Fans already wait in anticipation for where she will take her music next.

Northside Records as a performance venue is a central meting hub for music lovers alike to come and share their passion of the genres that they hold dear. When all-inclusive events take place, an audience is provided with active involvement in celebrating the vibrations that they love, an experience that many miss out on. A thriving community scene is also presented in these circumstances and a different buzz fills the crowd to that of a commercial ticketed performance. Aside for the literal connotations, intimate concerts are much more emotionally accessible to a crowd and leave a longer lasting warmth in the crowd. Personal connections are established.         “Seeing a show at Northside Records is like watching your team play at their home ground, it’s that sort of feeling.” A new generation of music lovers and musicians is built in moments like this as tender musical moments stick and influence further listening.

Funky times at a funky place are to follow ‘The Return’ of Sampa the Great.

On Tuesday November 20th we hosted an amazing live radio experience with GILLES PETERSON. We invited many local musicians to come down and talk to GILLES, not just musicians, but DJ’s, producers, and other integral members of this music community. Many came! It was a great day!The band LANEOUS performed live as well. They were incredible. Featuring four songs off their upcoming album. Gilles was STOKED!

Many great songs were played of these wonderful artists too. Some old gold was dropped in too, with a set by MIKE GURRIERI at the end too!

The Melbourne music community is massive and we could only fit so many in, see interviews that Gilles and I conduct with 30/70, MILDLIFE, HIATUS KAIYOTE, THE BAMBOOS, KYLIE AULDIST, DIGITAL AFRIKA, DJ PREQUEL, not just musicians but also PRODUCERS, DJ’s and other integral members of the music community.

It features GILLES PETERSON (BBC radio 6 / worldwide FM / Brownswood Recordings) and its a great snapshot of people who make other people feel…….and dance. The movie goes for just over 4 hours! We were sweating by the end of it. Who thought radio was that funky.

Specials thanks to SAXALL VIDEO and to CROWN RULER PROMOTIONS. and ALEX INTAS and of course, you the people for the support.

Northside will welcome

To celebrate the release of Overflow on vinyl, SAATSUMA have just announced a live in-store full-band performance at local wax institution Northside Records in Fitzroy on October 7th at 3pm. For this performance SAATSUMA will bring together the five-piece live band for the special performance.

Captivating Melbourne two-piece SAATSUMA share debut album, Overflow, which sees the duo emerge with a cultivated sound well beyond their years. Written and produced by Memphis LK and Cesar Rodrigues, Overflow is a continuity of a motif that runs throughout their body of work. Memphis LK says the album “continues the recurring theme of water, following on from our debut singles Storm and Floating. Water has always been present… it’s an element I am constantly drawn back to… Our connection to and interaction with the natural environment. The fragility and fluctuation of relationships.” It’s a nine track float on an imaginary SAATSUMA stream; from the comedown of ‘Feel It All’; drifting to a rejection of ignorance, ‘Isolate’; floating towards a notion of wanting what you can’t have, ‘Stay’ and the pull of the moon, ‘Crescent’.

Overflow 12” Vinyl LP is available for purchase at Northside Records, as well as available to stream/buy at

Make it to NORTHSIDE for this one!

Sampa The Great makes her Melbourne debut at the local home of soul. Free entry, must bring vibes.

“The Great Mixtape” contains sounds both classic and completely new, like a Digable Planets record that really did arrive from another, funkier planet” Okayplayer

“This is a record of personal, cultural, geographical and spiritual pride.” SoundDoc

“This is hip-hop of the highest quality” Indie Shuffle

“You don’t get old souls like Sampa in hip-hop anymore and that’s maybe what makes this listen so captivating” Cool Accidents

“It’s a search for creativity, laughter, purpose & rhythms.” With those four simple terms, Sampa The Great describes her astonishing newest release, “The Great Mixtape.” Hailing from Sydney by way of Zambia, Sampa has a penchant for poetry and weaves dense lyrical mazes with her verses, drawing listeners into a lush, imaginative world. Her music bonds from spoken-word to pure hip-hop rapping, with stops at psychedelic and bluesy waypoints in between; it’s the sound of an adventurous young mind pushing out against all boundaries.

To listen is to learn.

SASKWATCH launch new video for “I’ll Be Fine”

SASKWATCH have launched new a clip for their new single ‘I’ll Be Fine’.

The video was animated by Jason Galea and is the first single from their forthcoming album “Sorry I Let It Come Between Us” out June 12th via our own label!!!

The album itself was recorded over a month long period at Mt Slippery – an old silversmith warehouse come recording studio on the outskirts of Philadelphia, America. It’s the studio of Dr Dog’s Scott McMicken and Nathan Sabatino, who together produced the album. Saskwatch have long been big fans of Dr Dog, both musically and in their work as producers, and relished at the chance to head overseas and work alongside them. The result: a raw, solemn and sparse collection of genre-jumping songs.

Watch ‘I’ll Be Fine’ below!
