Saturday the 2nd of November sees a super-charged night of music at The Shadow Electric with freakadelic Bollywood goodness from The Bombay Royale, hot salsa and Latin funk from San Lazaro and a selection of rarities, versions and remixes from the funk and soul closet with Karate Boogaloo – the Cactus Channel rhythm section and their guests. It’s all in aid of launching HopeStreet’s Tropical Brunswick Mixtape, mixed by DJ Jumps.
What does Tropical Brunswick sound like? Don’t wait for global warming to find out. Unreleased gold from HopeStreet Recordings’ 2014 release schedule and hits and obscurities from the back catalog rub shoulders in the mix under the deft hands of DJ Jumps. Latin and afro bump up against funk, soul and spaghetti cinematica. It’s that hot analog sound you love, but you can get it on the interweb! The first 50 through the door receive a Hopestreet showbag containing the mixtape by DJ Jumps and a free 7″ vinyl from the catalog. TIX SELLING FAST!

Shin, manager of MOUNTAIN MOCHA KILIMANJARO stepped in this week to hand me some gooooodnes. Available at only 2 other stores WORLDWIDE the Japanese funk band MOUNTAIN MOCHA KILIMANJARO are a sensation. Their series of 7″s have been making waves around the world. One side original the other a cover it is a great way to make people dance.
I got the last copies in the world of the first in the series THE PREACHER / GET YOUR POINT OVER. The next in the series is the burner, the tune that flew to number one on the Japanese jazz charts. Sure, it ain’t jazz, its super funky! STOMPIN JOE / TOO HIGH, thats right, the Stevie Wonder classic! Then there is the third which gets a little rockier WHAT SATISFIES YOU IF YOU CANT GET ENOUGH / EXODUS, yes a Bob Marley funk version. $14 EACH
Then get ready for some more, the drummer TIGER, or YOSUKE TOMINAGA has given Northside a rare priviledge, a WORDLWIDE EXCLUSIVE. His 45’s are NOT sold at shops, just his gigs in Japan, but a small number have found their way to Northside. These two 45’s are super heavy drum based funk joints. Almost library styles in their bigness. Just drums and bass, a few little surprises, but just the bigness…$15 EACH…only a handful left….
A new venue lurks in the inner North. Where once stood Baba, now glows a new animal – the B.EAST. It’s a licensed band venue that will be bringing the funk. Lauching this new monthly dirty funky soul night, VOODOO SHAKE!, are the local afrobeat magnates, THE PUBLIC OPINION AFRO ORCHESTRA. I will be dj’ing alongside Mr Future Roots. The night looks like it might be free. DO NOT MISS THIS!
if you can’t wait and need some more funk. Check out the legendary DJ DEXTER (of the Avalanches) Fridays in JULY and Thursdays in AUGUST
LOVE LETTER / WHATTA MAN
!!OUT ON THURSDAY!!
this is THE SONG. This is the one! This is THE tune that is making Melbourne hips grind, making Melbourne’s bootys bounce. This baritone sax lead stomper is a real jam! Is is almost a perfectly written dance song. Its got swing and grind and a snarl that makes you HAVE to move. The second single released off the now sold out LP. These cats gonna make you dance!
I don’t mean Camberwell Carrots, I am talking about some great recent releases to come out on 7″ vinyl. Or you might know them as 45’s. These are some heavy hitters from around the world. Starting with THE TRANSGRESSORS, this is an unreleased track from the POETS OF RHYTHM or you might know them as THE WHITEFILED BROTHERS. Whatever, these German cats have been doing it for longer than the Dap Kings and hit harder than the taxman.
Then we have the QUANTIC and ALICE RUSSELL direct to disc recording of the two beautiful soul tracks from their latest album. Originally for record store day these babies got held up in shpiping delays. They are here now though. Recorded during the London Riots they have an amazing soulful calm about them.
Then don’t forget RICKEY CALLOWAY outta Florida, who teams up with his favourite band WILL SESSIONS from Detroit. This is some heavy and cold american A grade funk. Aso check the dope instrumental on the flip!
Great records are out and about – all you gotta do is come get some.
Someone pulled my coat as to a little CNN article about 50 reasons why Melbourne is the worlds most liveable city. Looks like Northside (and the other 50+ record stores in town) and our neighbour Dr Follicles are doing good in this crazy little town…..Caught on film, as the Bombay Royale 45 is finally delivered by Tristan, to a happy record store guy…
47. Vinyl capital of the world
Chris Gill is among a band of Melbourne record sellers who are marginally broke but happy. While the rest of the world goes digital, there are still about 50 vinyl record stores around Melbourne, staying alive in musical worship of everything from Bollywood funk and hip-hop and retro rock. That’s more stores and more records, per capita, than any other place in the world.
As well as the latest-pressed seven-inchers by local DJs, there are always bins of pre-loved and once-loved stuff. “None of us are making much money,” says Chris Gill, owner of Northside Records in Fitzroy. “But we’re happy.”

46. Free beer during haircuts
There are more than a few combination hairdresser/barber/tobacconists. At Doctor Follicles in Fitzroy, Richmond and St Kilda, you even get a free beer with your haircut. It’s the discerning man’s choice. (Conveniently located neat Nothside!)

LORD FINESSE…..hip hop royalty…..head of the DITC crew… will be at Northside Records Friday 23rd, 5.30pm for a instore signing. Sure he’ll have a dig as well, as you know he is one of the heaviest diggers around. His production always pays homage to super fine funk and soul riffs so he’ll be right at home at Northside!
Lord Finesse should need no introduction to any hip hop head — his crew D.I.T.C — that’s Diggin’ In The Crates, is made up of the creme of New York’s finest: Big L, Diamond D, Showbiz & AG, OC, Fat Joe & Buckwild, and the extended fam includes cats like Dj Premier, Big Pun, Freddie Foxxx aka Bumpy Knuckles, Cuban Link, Party Arty and Bless of Wild Life crew just to name drop a few.
Known for his laid back rhyming style and smooth flows, Finesse has recorded three albums with D.I.T.C: D.I.T.C, All Love and a live album recorded in memory of Big L, as well as several solo albums: The Funky Technician, Return Of The Funky Man, The Awakening plus 2 ‘rare and unreleased’ compilation albums. Fin has also produced beats for some real hip hop heavyweights, including Notorious B.I.G and Dr. Dre amongst others, and is well known for holding it down as a DJ too. There are not many cats in the game who can MC, produce and DJ and even less who would come close to touching Lord Finesse in any of these skills let alone all three. Respect!
Party starts at 5.30pm on Friday. Bring your Finesse Productions, LPs and girlfriends down and have them autographed by The Funky Technician, say hi and get the lowdown from the man himself. Better get in early – diggers in the house…
Word up: After the signing shit gets crazy at the Laundry. Get Up presents: Lord Finesse, Sheep, Manchild, Mu-Gen, Arks, Class A & Lotus. Don’t sleep.

Incredible afro force that flies in from Adelaide will land at The Laundry Bar this friday to launch their incredible debut LP “Flight Of The Ancients”. Do yourself a favour and be there for the fantastic night that will blow your mind!
The mysterious afro-soul of The Shaolin Afronauts first echoed across the dance floors of Australia in late early 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970’s West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avant-garde jazz artists of the same period the Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same fire and intensity. Their spirited performances have fast gained a reputation as some of the most exciting live shows around. Though there is something refreshing and original about the Afronauts, their music could be described as somewhere in between the heavy Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu Astatke.
supports on the night come from me, KANO, Tom Noonan and Melbourne funk sensations SASKWATCH. Now last time Saskwatch played there were no red cardigans! Is there a funk revolution or is Liam doing the dry cleaning? Do not miss this gig as it will blow your mind, my mind and potentially get you some fresh moves for the Syl Johnson show the next night! and then the TRANSATLANTICS show at BAR OPEN…its free and SYL will finish at midnight, so hurry over to Fitzroy!!
