“I have grown tired of looking at T-shirt designs that say BROOKLYN and L.A. so I decided it was time to bring a little local flavour for the crew… Who is the crew? That is you! All the peoples that have been part of what we can now call BURN CITY SOUL*. Forged here in Melbourne in the 21st century – It’s not just soul or hip hop, or jazz, or funk, or even community radio. It’s way bigger than the sum of it’s parts. It’s all over the city and deep in the suburbs, and slowly spreading around the world.”
HOOK TURN & SLING !

Two days – two shows – two smoking hot new releases – too cool…
Get down on Friday night (Feb. 20) with The Seven Ups for the new album launch party, and then on Saturday (Feb. 21) get up to the sounds of The Meltdown, launching their new single “Better Days” on HopeStreet Recordings.
THE SEVEN UPS – After kicking around the Melbourne scene for the last three years, 7-piece Afro-Funk combo, The Seven Ups, will be releasing their debut, self-titled album. Having already released two 7inch singles, the album showcases the breadth of the bands sound through 10-tracks of blistering Afrobeat and Funk, with hints of Soul, Jazz and Rock.Co-produced by Tristan Ludowyk (Bombay Royale, Cactus Channel, Public Opinion Afro Orchestra), this album is old-school gritty-funk, recorded the way it should be. Career highlights for the band so far have included opening for Charles Bradley (USA), Babylon Circus (FRA) and The Bamboos (AUS), as well as a string of raucous residencies at Melbourne venues and a wild set at Folk, Rhythm & Life Festival. LIVE AT NORTHSIDE ON FRIDAY NIGHT 6pm
THE MELTDOWN – There are a lot of soul revival bands around, but the Meltdown’s angle is different – Simon is pretty country and Lachlan is pretty country too. It’s got a bit of that Ray Charles country via gospel thing, and little taste of dirty blues too. Echoes of towns like Euroa and Avenel, where the boys grew up, or just artistic license? It’s a big, bold, brassy band of twangy guitars, bumping backbeats and swinging New Orleans shuffles. Then there’s that voice. As sweet as honey. It’s soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where… Introducing “Better Days.” The Meltdown’s first release on HopeStreet Recordings. LIVE AT NORTHSIDE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON at 1pm
Saturday April 19 is Record Store Day, and a huge party at Northside Records. If you’re in Fitzroy on Record Store Day, come down to Northside for live appearances by Oscar Key Sung (2pm) and N’Fa Jones and crew + special guest Remi (3pm). Miss Goldie and Lance Ferguson will be providing tunes between bands and throughout the afternoon. Giveaways from Cake Wines and loads more surprises on the day. Support you Independent Record Stores! See the poster below for all the details.
Record Store Day is also be the official launch date of the 2014 Diggin’ Melbourne Map (Volume 5) – cop yours at Northside Records.
