New venue – NEW NIGHT – VOODOO SHAKE!
A new venue lurks in the inner North. Where once stood Baba, now glows a new animal – the B.EAST. It’s a licensed band venue that will be bringing the funk. Lauching this new monthly dirty funky soul night, VOODOO SHAKE!, are the local afrobeat magnates, THE PUBLIC OPINION AFRO ORCHESTRA. I will be dj’ing alongside Mr Future Roots. The night looks like it might be free. DO NOT MISS THIS!
if you can’t wait and need some more funk. Check out the legendary DJ DEXTER (of the Avalanches) Fridays in JULY and Thursdays in AUGUST
Black Jesus Experience & The Afrobiotics: Queens Birthday Eve
JUNE 10 – ORDER OF MELBOURNE
This Sunday night, June 10 (Queens Birthday Eve) is another explosion of African-inspired music in Melbourne. Featuring two of Melbourne’s finest exponents of afrobeat, african-groove and ethio-sounds, The Black Jesus Experience and The Afrobiotics, it’s gonna be LARGE!
If you dig the sounds of Fela, Tony Allen, Mulatu, Poets of Rhythm or Anitbalas, you need to get your thing together and get on up. If you’ve never heard of any of the artists I’m name-dropping – or the bands performing at this gig, you ain’t living. This is real music for real people.
FROM PRESS RELEASE:
“The Black Jesus Experience bring the sounds of Ethiopia, combined with 5 continents of funk to the Melbourne massive. In 2012 BJX played to crowds at major European festivals including Glastonbury and a tour of Ethiopia! BJX are also the band of choice for the Father of Ethiojazz, Mulatu Astatke, with numerous tours under their belts. This collaboration has been so enjoyable and creative that Mulatu and BJX continue to tour Australia and Europe together and recently won The Age ‘Best Tour’ award.”
“The Afrobiotics are a six piece band that breathe new life into the sounds of West Africa and bring a powerful message of resistance to the next generation of afro-beat. This is afro- beat medicine administered directly to your soul.”
