Northside is proud to introduce two fresh bands – MAYFIELD and The SHOWTIME QUINTET feat. 1/6 and Class A. Both line-ups will bring the funk to Northside Records on Saturday October 15th from 2pm, and both bands are lauching new 7″ singles on the day. It’s going to be a fun Saturday afternoon!
MAYFIELD are a funky soul band headed by soul queen Carla Troiano. She has rocked Women Of Soul before and been singing about for a while now. The girl has skills. Backed by Melbourne toughest funk backbeat, Ivan “CHOI” Katchoyan, these guys are ready to do it to it. New Mayfield 45 out on Choi Records
TOM SHOWTIME has been making the party jump for a while now. Playing sax, making beats and inviting friends to lay down great vocals over his treats is a good recipe. Here he calls on legendary MC from The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra 1/6, and good friend, female MC Class A to make it all work. And work it does!!! Performing as the Showtime Quintet. New 45 out on Groove Penguin Records

Yes, the LEGEND himself, MULATU ASTATKE will be performing at NORTHSIDE! Together with his band Black Jesus Experience, they have recorded a new album called CRADLE OF HUMANITY. They will be officially releasing and performing the entire album live at Northside Records. They will also have exclusive VINYL copies of the new album available for sale at the show (this will be first time the record will be available).
This is a unique honour for Northside Records. To have an artist of the calibre of the man who invented the sound ETHIO JAZZ is amazing. And in turn – for you the public to be able to see someone of the stature in such an intimate setting is equally unique. Both his MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL shows have sold out and this could be your last chance to see the master. Not to be missed.
Whilst the official album launch and vinyl release is June 7, we already have copies of the new album available on CD, and you can cop a listen right now on Bandcamp blackjesusexperience.bandcamp.com Damn – the new versions of NETSASET and YEKATIT on here are smokin! Blowin’ up from Mebourne to Addis Ababa.
Gonna be massive! We have an all-star line-up playing live in the store from 2pm, along with DJs playing their favourite records from start to finish. Damn, shit is blowing up on our door step again. This time it’s Silent Jay and Jace XL, taking the underground by storm with the release of their debut “SACRIFICE” EP on UK based label Rhythm Section. We are lucky enough to have this talented duo appearing live instore on Friday January 15th to celebrate the release of the new EP (that has already sold out worldwide!). Fortunately, we will have exclusive limited stock of the cassette EP available on the night. Don’t miss your chance to bag one – and more importantly, don’t miss your chance to see Silent Jay X Jace XL live at Northside.
Cop a listen of the new EP right now. SACRIFICE
From the press release: “Coming straight out of Melbourne with plentiful attitude, Producer/multi-instrumentalist Silentjay teams up with fellow Hiatus Kaiyote backing vocalist, Jace XL to present ‘Sacrifice’, a mini album of epic proportions.
At once sincere and heartfelt, the songs do not shy away from the playful influence of 90s RnB – a sound that is a defining influence on this EP, which despite clocking in at just under 30 minutes, attains a level of artistry and conceptual cohesiveness that many artists could only dream of. Another VERY serious record from an impossibly fertile Melbourne.“
Some things are just meant to go together – peaches & cream, cheese & vegemite, Pete Rock & CL Smooth and so on. Silent Jay X Jace XL are no exception. Spread it thick!
I told you to watch this space! See the poster for all the details. Read below for what Chris Gill has to say about this upcoming instore. Be there!
“This next announcement could be my proudest moment yet. For the 13 years I have operated this shop, one album that I say is perhaps the most important of all Australian records is ARCHIE ROACH’s “Charcoal Lane”. It was written on Gertrude Street, it was lived on Gertrude Street. For the first few years of the store I had a copy in the window. Now we get much more than that… THE 25 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of one of the countries most Important records ever made. It is ARCHIE ROACH “Charcoal Lane”.
I am proud to announce that at 2pm on SuNDAY the 15th NOVEMBER Northside Records will host the legend Archie Roach, live and INSTORE performing songs off his album Charcoal Lane that he wrote here 25 years ago. To commemorate the milestone CHARCOAL LANE has been reissued as a vinyl album the way it was originally released back then…. Come to Northside to secure a copy as they are VERY LIMITED.
Archie will be joined instore by another up and coming Australian legends EMMA DONOVAN & THE PUTBACKS. They will also PERFORM LIVE in the store. As you know Emma and the Putbacks have just released an amazing double sided 7″ which upholds the local indigenous heritage with a cover version of ARCHIE ROACH and on the other side WARUMPI BAND.” See the previous post for more info.
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11th at 7pm, LIVE INSTORE!
Make it to NORTHSIDE for this one!
Sampa The Great makes her Melbourne debut at the local home of soul. Free entry, must bring vibes.
“The Great Mixtape” contains sounds both classic and completely new, like a Digable Planets record that really did arrive from another, funkier planet” Okayplayer
“This is a record of personal, cultural, geographical and spiritual pride.” SoundDoc
“This is hip-hop of the highest quality” Indie Shuffle
“You don’t get old souls like Sampa in hip-hop anymore and that’s maybe what makes this listen so captivating” Cool Accidents
“It’s a search for creativity, laughter, purpose & rhythms.” With those four simple terms, Sampa The Great describes her astonishing newest release, “The Great Mixtape.” Hailing from Sydney by way of Zambia, Sampa has a penchant for poetry and weaves dense lyrical mazes with her verses, drawing listeners into a lush, imaginative world. Her music bonds from spoken-word to pure hip-hop rapping, with stops at psychedelic and bluesy waypoints in between; it’s the sound of an adventurous young mind pushing out against all boundaries.
To listen is to learn.

Last night I had the pleasure of watching Ted Vining play with the band BLOW at The Horn in Collingwood. Ted is a local drummer who has been playing since the 60’s and he still plays every Thursday night and more! Seeing him play was amazing. I was sitting down eating dinner until they played this tune. For the first time ever they dropped EDDIE HARRIS’ “Freedom Jazz Dance” It was a monster. It was straight to the dancefloor for that one.
Tedd also played on this legendary Aussie funky jazz album. It was with Alan Lee on vibes and at the National Gallery under the stained glass. (A venue still used today, Hiatus Kaiyote and Saskwatch played their recently!) I had a copy this week. But as I told Ted half a dozen people wanted a copy within 20 minutes. He walked tall that night.
This is the band in 1973 making Stravinsky Super funky!
Remember April 30th is World Jazz Day.
That’s right party people – Karate Boogaloo and Charles Bradley’s Extraordinaires are taking over Ferdydurke tonight (Tues March 31). It’s all still a bit of a mystery – but we do know that Karate Boogaloo will take the stage with members of The Extraodinaires to bring you a crazy night of instrumental soul heat! Who knows…. someone might even sing?!
Helping hold it down with the deep soul and ethio business will be Miss Goldie, Cassawarrior and The Broadway Sounds DJs. The needle drops at 7pm – and entry is free.
Thanks to everyone who came down to our first Soulclash Party on Sunday night – it was a huge success! Big ups to Remi, Sensible J, Dan Merriweather and the The Seven Ups for making it a party to remember. We already have plans afoot for the next Soulclash in the very near future.
