Emma Vollard – Instore Launch
Posted by Rex in Album Launch, Fresh stock, Live music, News, People, Recent releases on July 12th, 2022
THIS FRIDAY, JULY 15
6pm sharp.
To celebrate the release of her incredible debut album DEITY @emmavolardmusic would like to perform at Northside to launch the record into the world! And we couldn’t be happier! Also stoked to see the first ever physical release on @theoperatives label as well!
“The 12-part body of work is a journey though joy, sorrow and everything in-between. “Deity is a love letter to myself”, Volard explains. “A reminder to break boundaries, express myself without fear, and allow myself to grow and love unconditionally.”
Caught in the push-pull between light and shade, joy and sorrow, chaos and order, Deity is an album that draws power from the divine messiness of the human experience. Synthesising acid jazz with modern R&B, dub with pop, and future soul with old-fashioned grooves, it’s a statement of profound artistic intent for Emma.
We have followed Emma for a while now and couldn’t be prouder of the incredible record she has made with her great friends.
Come and share the good times this Friday at 6pm sharp! All gigs here at Northside are ALL AGES and at every gig there is a prize for the best dancer.
We will be gathering on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and pay respects to elders past present and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded.

AUSTRALIA DOES NOT EXIST bw. ALWAYS REMEMBER
Northside Records NR023S. Ltd. Edition
Neil Morris, or DRMNGNOW, is a Yorta-Yorta man and musician with a purpose. DRMNGNOW (pronounced Dreaming Now) is a project which is firmly focused on raising awareness around Indigenous justice in a post colonial society. This work is complex and is as equal parts system challenging as it is celebratory. The single Australia Does Not Exist has been re-visited featuring Kee’ahn, a proud Kuku Yalanji, Jirrbal and Torres Strait Island woman, exciting emerging artist, and intergral part of the DRMNGNOW live experience . Her voice as an Indigenous woman speaks powerful volumes on this iteration of DRMNGNOWs debut track first released January last year. Always Remember is a new song also ft Kee’ahn and Paul Gorrie adding a soulful touch to this piece on the hook. It is a song about Indigenous resillience in the face of colonial violence. It is a song that reflects on the link to thousands of years of spiritual power that the indigenous experience holds. This seven inch release is as part of Naidoc Week and to give eternal life to important local songs. |

Whoa! It’s that time again. Saturday April 21. We have a massive day planned. Bands, DJs, exclusive releases, 45s galore, a ‘FUNK CAVE’*, hobbyists on the cut, giveaways and prizes! 10am-7pm. Even the RSD Tour Bus will be arriving and departing at Northside throughout the day. Live performances from The Bamboos, Jaala, Remi, Plutonic Lab and Natalie Slade, Cool Out Sun + DJs in TWO ROOMS all day long. Your favourite community radio jocks from PBS and RRR will be joined by some of our favourite customers, label owners and the Northside Records soundsystem – dropping knowledge and keeping the vibes rolling until dark.
It’s been our policy in recent years that RSD performers should have a record to present for Record Store Day – and let’s just say this year is an exceptional year! You may want to get out of bed early if you want a piece of Record Store Day history. Every band has a brand new 45 or LP released on the day. Some of these upcoming RSD releases have been previewed on critically acclaimed and internationally renowned community radio shows such as GET DOWN, MYSTIC BREW, THE BREAKDOWN and the THE BLEND. Catch those shows again this week for more tasters.
Full details of Saturday’s action will be available soon. * THE FUNK CAVE: Once again we are able to occupy 238 Gertrude for the day. We’ll have crates of all-sorts + electronica grab-bags, pop-up DJs, refreshments, lounges, coloured lights and room to dance. If you subscribe to our newsletter you’ll get the scoop at 11am on Thursday. If you don’t subscribe, you should – or watch this space for updates.
And, if that’s not enough – we have a superfine release that comes out on Northside Records’ label, this Friday, April 20. The Seven Ups return with their third album ‘Commandments’, and they just keep getting better. Rather than describe the music, below is the album artwork that looks a lot like the album sounds! Sadly they can’t be with us on Record Store Day, but we’ll have the record for sale – and more exciting news about their official launch coming soon. Don’t forget – it’s Record Store Day everyday at Northside.

TomGirl + GODTET live instore!
Posted by Rex in Album Launch, Fresh stock, In the crates, Live music, News, People on October 30th, 2017
On Saturday 11th of November Northside Records presents TomGirl and GODTET live instore. Both bands are launching their highly anticipated debut releases – on Northside Records and La Sape Records respectively.
TomGirl’s debut release in yet another soul-hybrid from Melbourne’s inner-North. The new single ‘My lovers’ is a little anthem for love that isn’t finite – it is formless and free. The flipside ‘Dunes’ is a mostly instrumental tune reminiscent of 60’s psych-lounge, 70’s surf soundtracks and urban noir, with a touch of the ‘doo-wops’…. totally unique and beyond classification. TomGirl is an all-female five piece comprising Anita Chorowicz, Danika Smith, Harmony Byrne, Laura Clinch and Shanti Lane. Live at Northside from 3pm.
GODTET is a new band put together by Sydney-based guitarist/producer Godriguez. Dave ‘Godriguez’ burst on the scene in 2015 as the producer for Sampa the Great’s ‘Great Mixtape’, making waves both here and all over the world. Whilst the players here are from a jazz background and the instrumentation is undoubtably jazz, the music pushes into other territories. The debut release is out now and available at Northside and all good record stores. Cop a listen here – and you’ll know why you need to be at Northside to seeGODTET performing live instore.
INSTORE ANNOUNCEMENT
Posted by Chris in Gigs, Live music on September 28th, 2017
SATURDAY 7 TH OCTOBER
Northside will welcome
SAATSUMA
To celebrate the release of Overflow on vinyl, SAATSUMA have just announced a live in-store full-band performance at local wax institution Northside Records in Fitzroy on October 7th at 3pm. For this performance SAATSUMA will bring together the five-piece live band for the special performance.
Captivating Melbourne two-piece SAATSUMA share debut album, Overflow, which sees the duo emerge with a cultivated sound well beyond their years. Written and produced by Memphis LK and Cesar Rodrigues, Overflow is a continuity of a motif that runs throughout their body of work. Memphis LK says the album “continues the recurring theme of water, following on from our debut singles Storm and Floating. Water has always been present… it’s an element I am constantly drawn back to… Our connection to and interaction with the natural environment. The fragility and fluctuation of relationships.” It’s a nine track float on an imaginary SAATSUMA stream; from the comedown of ‘Feel It All’; drifting to a rejection of ignorance, ‘Isolate’; floating towards a notion of wanting what you can’t have, ‘Stay’ and the pull of the moon, ‘Crescent’.
Overflow 12” Vinyl LP is available for purchase at Northside Records, as well as available to stream/buy at saatsuma.com.
