Allysha Joy’s debut 45 – FNFL / Akala

Northside Records is very excited about the New Allysha Joy 45, out now on our own Northside Records label. With all the hype about Record Store Day over the last couple of weeks we haven’t really had a chance to shine the light on this release yet. For those who were lucky enough to witness Allysha and her band performing at the store on Saturday for RSD, you’ll understand why we are excited. For those who don’t know, Allysha is part of Melbourne soul collective, 30/70, who released their own underground classic “Cold Radish Coma” in 2015. Since then Allysha and co. have been relentlessly performing and and pushing the boundaries of the ever expanding Melbourne’s soul, hip hop and jazz scenes.

Call it whatever you want, we call it fire. The proof is in the listening. We have limited numbers of the 45 remaining at Northside, and you can possibly still find it around town at our favourite record stores. Available as audio-download sometime soon.

The other treat we dropped on Record Store Day is this: Six to Six by Hiroshio and Claudia. Originally released in 1979, this Sydney/Tokyo recording really defies description. There are elements of jazz, soul, disco along with atmospheric soundscapes and fat drum breaks that have deservedly turned this into one of the most sought-after vinyl rarities ever to come out of Australia. The new reissue recording was painstakingly restored and remastered by Dan Elleson, and sounds every bit as good as the original, if not better! This release is in conjunction with The Roundtable, and you can get the full story and a taste of this record over at Light In The Attic, who’ve trumped us all and have a great page dedicated to this release. Thanks Light In The Attic!

Finally, a quick thanks to everyone who came through Northside on Saturday. What a day! A full round-up will follow as soon as Chris cleans the shop 😉 Big ups to Chris as well, a massive effort on his behalf. Every day is Record Store Day at Northside.

this is FOR REAL! 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day, and we do it with a BANG! Add to this list of GREATNESS ABOVE this list of DJ’s that will be playing throughout the day at Northside!

MZ RIZK 9-10

EMMA PEEL   10-11

PERIL  12-1

REMI 2-2:45

SENSIBLE J 2:45 – 3:30

DJ MANCHILD & REX to fill between bands

MISS GOLDIE 5:30 – 6pm

Not to mention lots of great records as well.

HIROSHI & CLAUDIA “Six To Six” (atom / Northside Records)

A session recorded in Sydney in 1979 by a group of touring Japanese jazz musicians led by guitarist Hiroshi Yasukawa, and a forgotten and still undocumented Mauritian cabaret singer performing under the alias ‘Claudia’. Sitting somewhere between spacey Balearic disco, haunting soul and hectic funk reminiscent of electric Miles Davis, the Six To Six LP is a curious beast to say the least.

Northside will also be issuing the FIRST SOLO RECORDING of local SOUL SUPERSTAR

ALLYSHA JOY “Fnfl / Akala” on Northside Records.

The single, FNFL lends a voice to Indigenous Australians, reflecting upon their ongoing battle for custody of their land, custody of their children and open expression of their culture. The B side, Akala was inspired by the UK rapper and humanitarian of the same name, it is a song to incite change for those people seeking asylum, and to encourage rightful news broadcasting of this matter and many others.

Come down to the store it will be a fun day.

SEVEN UPS release new LP called DRINKING WATER

Local Melbourne 9 piece afro funk heroes THE SEVEN UPS have now released their second album DRINKING WATER on the magnificent Northside Records label.

Proudly displaying this Melbourne groove, Northside is very happy to showcase what we have in this town with this super funky sound.

Its  follow up to 2015’s self-titled, the new record steps things up a notch with faster tunes, deeper grooves and just a bit more crunch.
The self-produced batch of 7 new tracks holds on to the bands established
sound of improvised solos over afro grooves, but this time there’s a shift in
focus to more complex arrangements and a tighter interplay between the
rhythm section.
The album kicks off with an extended, unaccompanied sax solo (an
undeniable homage to Fela) played by the tracks namesake, Harry Cooper.
Tracks like The Aviator and 17hr Trip roll along at breakneck speed while Bello at Night is reminiscent of one of Fela’s slow jams, and Through the Dust explores the darker side of heavy groove. The album then closes with the 10 minute epic title track.
The album features original artwork by Bjenny Montero (Pond, Gum, Kurt Vile) and will be available on Vinyl, CD and digitally.
Catch them here…
Apr 7 – Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy VIC
Apr 21 – Boundary Hotel, Brisbane
Apr 22 – Queen St Mall, Brisbane
Apr 22 – The Night Quarter, Gold Coast QLD
May 19 – Lazy Bones, Sydney
May 20 – Hotel Gearin, Katoomba NSW

Melbourne’s famed original rhythm section from the band SASKWATCH finally release their debut tune.

Two tracks ABUJA DEATH CAB and SNAG. Two super heavy afro / doom / soul jamsthat are aimed at the floor but hit you in the hips.

Abruja is a pulsing and driving song with great horn stabs and dreamy piano lines.
Snag is a lot slower with big fat wobbly bass. then halfway through the distortion pedal kicks the bass and it gets even heavier.

With amazing artwork on the 7 inch this is a beautiful slice of Melbourne flavoured licorice pie.

The SEVEN INCH is out now and available in STORE or on the night for $10.

Thats right this year on December 25th marks the 10 year anniversary of James Browns death. The man who is responsible for this thing we call the FUNK. We have been having this party for the last NINE years on XMAS NIGHT to dance the blues away. Celebrate what he left the world.
Well it’s that time of year again, lights, trees and The KBs. As always The Curtin is where we do, Christmas night is when we do and The Godfather of Soul is who we do it for. It’s been a whole decade since Brother Number One passed away, saving all our Souls. How in the world can we pay proper homage to The Hardest Working Man In Show Business on the funkiest of day of the festive season? Dutifully play the 1971 Olympia, Paris set as close as we are humanly possible of doing of course. The Phelps brothers were in the fold, Cheese Martin scratchin the guitar, Jabo on drums, St Claire Pinckney and Fred Wesley leading the horn section, Bobby Byrd doing his good, good thing on whatever was required and Mr. Dynamite up there with his bad, bad self. It’s a historical set they put down on March 8th, it deserves a World-Wide holiday itself but it just gets Christmas night this year. The KBs feature members of The Cactus Channel, Karate Boogaloo, Sex On Toast, Copperhead Brass Band and other funky Melbourne groups, if you’ve seen them before, you know you can’t miss it. With DJs in full effect The K.B.’s paying respect to Mr. Please Please Please, you know what you gotta do to save your Soul.

DOORS open at 8pm. FREE ENTRY
